Neighborhood Clean Up makes a difference ...North Park Community Association and North Park Main Street cleaned up again, to protect the environment and keep our neighborhood looking good! We were back at Jack’s Muffler Shop, 2125 University Ave., and there were about 20-25 people who moved probably well over 1,000 pounds of garbage. George Franck graciously hauled a refrigerator that two volunteers had found in an alley — he took it all the way to the Miramar landfill. Several new participants joined us. See the interactive Clean Up map on this website that has 'before' and 'after' photos at markers to indicate many of the locations where trash was removed. Sofas, chairs and mattresses are the items found in greatest numbers. A small group of folks from the Carmel Heights subdivision, led by Graham Blair, spent several hours at the I-805 offramp/onramp at North Park Way and Boundary Street, a couple of blocks north and south of University Avenue, raking up all the cigarette butts and trash. Graham says: "Looks like everyone likes to use that place as an ashtray instead of keeping those smelly butts in their own car ashtrays! It looks great now...but no telling how long it will last." They also worked on the Boundary/University intersection and the I-805 onramp/offramp at the Chevron station on University. "A business owner came out over there to thank us for our efforts...nice." Graham took even further action and called Caltrans, which sent out a crew of 8 people that cleaned up the sides of I-805 between El Cajon Blvd. and University, and all the onramps/offramps. They said they will come out whenever we think it needs it again. Special Thanks to all of the volunteers, and to Jack's Muffler Shop, Walgreen's, Starbucks, Lefty's Chicago Pizzeria, Councilmember Toni Atkins, Allied Waste Services, and the City of San Diego Environmental Services for supporting this event. You are invited to be a "part of the solution" - Come out to the next Clean Up on April 26th. It's just a few hours of your time and a great way to meet your neighbors, while contributing to one of the events that make North Park a great place to live.
