Neighborhood Clean Up 6/28/08 PDF Print E-mail
The NPCA and North Park Main Street got together again on June 28th as part of the neighborhood’s own solution to keeping North Park a great place to live and improving the environment. We covered fewer sections of North Park this time around but still got just as much old furniture, furnishings, mattresses, and trash. The largest concentration this time was between Florida and Hamilton, north of University. Special thanks to Jack's Muffler Shop, Starbucks, Sicilian Thing Pizza, Councilmember Toni Atkins, EDCO, and the City of San Diego Environmental Services for supporting this event.

As neighbors, we all share the same grocery stores, parks, markets, and coffee shops. And we need your help to really keep North Park clean. Even if you can’t come out on the day of a clean-up, consider telling your neighbors who’s removing all that trash. If you own rental property in North Park, consider donating to the NPCA or NPMS to help pay for the cost of these clean-ups.

Now for the numbers. We removed:*

            --11 couches
            --7 mattresses
            --several rolls of carpet
--over 2,670 pounds of trash in total

So far in 2008 we have removed over 8,000 pounds of trash from the streets and alleys of North Park. This is a volunteer effort driven by neighbors who want to make sure we have a great place to live, shop, and enjoy spending time.

If you’d like to see an interactive map of the streets and alleys your neighbors covered in previous cleanups, visit: www.northparksd.org and go to the Clean-up Maps section.

Also, here are a few simple things you can do to help:

  • Tell your landlord we will work WITH her so that departing tenants have a place to discard items responsibly, and give them my email ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it )
  • Volunteer for 60 minutes during a clean-up…they only happen every other month!
  • Let a friend borrow your truck to help out if you can’t make it to a clean-up
  • Pick up in the alley behind just your home for 5 minutes each week.

These small steps can have a great long-term benefit to your block and our neighborhood as a whole. We would also like to give a special thanks to the folks at Starbucks in Hillcrest, who both volunteered and donated coffee, and Sicilian Thing, who co-sponsored the event and helped reward the volunteers with a free lunch!
